BANDALOGY 101: How To Get (Grab/Steal) Gigs

We get it often these days. "Asa naay tukar?" "Paapila mi beh?" "Sila sila ra ba." "Mga tiguwang na mo mao naa moy tukar. Kami bata pa...blah-blah-blah" "Mga sikat ray pwede motukar. Salig mo, sikat mo sa pagka way byu!" "Amigohay ra ang pwede motukar."

Blah.

Whiners and pussies come by the dozen. In the local band scene, they come in droves. Thus, I've come up with a list/guide to help these little wusses land/grab/steal gigs on their own.

1. Join contests. Once in a while, band contests are held. BQ Mall just recently finished one. A couple months back, Tip2x fiesta did one also. You may also join national contests with local elimination rounds. Nescafe Soundskool, Red Horse Muziklaban and Globe Kantabataan do theirs regularly each year.

2. Freshen Up Your Network. Not a single gig lately? Make friends with promoters, managers and event organizers. Makoi (Mark Hubac Productions, hehe kapatid!), Maw2x (Central Sense), Dadskidoo (PlugOut/GaraheEvents), Milo (Kalma Sounds) and Arvin (101 Productions) - approach them with a couple chilled bottles of Red Horse in hand and you'll be friends with them easy. These guys do regular gigs. They might just slip you in if you're nice enough (meaning: give more beers).

3. Martin's Bar. Ahhhhh..our favorite hang out. They serve the best chilled Red Horse in town. Also, they support bands both old and new. Go ask Ate Amor or Ate Heidz if you can play in one of the slow nights. I'm sure they'll comply. Just ask nice. Or you could hang out with Bic2x (meaning: give more beers, again) and he'll give you a gig easy.

4. Record Your Songs. With SoundGarage Recording Studio just around the corner, recording you own music is quick and painless these days. If you are serious about your band making music, this is the single most efficient thing to do. With your recorded song you can: share to friends, submit to FM stations, submit to Disco Mobiles, make a music video or upload to Imeem and be included in the BoholBand playlist. The BangBang concert series is also held for bands included in the compilation album of songs recorded at SoundGarage. If interested, just hang out with the iconic Mr. Roy Tutor. (Current rate: P2,000 per song, unlimited time, 1 bottle Tanduay)

5. Online Gigs. Who said you have to be at an actual physical stage to do a gig? You can be at the comforts of you own dusty, chlorine-smelling, insect-infested rooms and still play for the world to see. Live online streaming may be the way to go, baby (if you are one shy/unsocial bitch that is). Or just record your acoustic sessions and put them up on Youtube, Vimeo or Facebook. You get way more coverage this way.

Bottomline is, be more pro-active. Gigs won't come to you. Hell no! Find ways you lousy whining dipshit. Make things happen for your band. Play for the world and the world will listen.

P.S.
Of course, you have to practice harder. And more frequently, too. Don't just practice when there is a contest coming. Don't you ever come to me asking for a gig only to play your lame-ass music with your lame-ass skills, brader.

Maybe nobody wants you to play 'coz you suck? Ponder on that.

BTW, trivia lang. We were looking for an appropriate title for the event. I was thinking in the lines of "strings". Makoi suggested "Strings of Summer". Mao diay. Naa diay sila event na summer-summer pud.hehe No time to change titles, pasagdi na lang na.

Sadly, the event was only limited up to 12 midnight. Everyone had to pack up, leave and go home. Well, some went home but a few others went to Tachycardia for the after party.

Bang! Bang! Makes History

It’s been a week since “Bang Bang” went to real live event. Despite stormy weather the event still fired and stood up. BANG BANG was the first music compilation of Bohol’s Indie Rock Bands that featured Timber, Suitcase 101, Yordaddy, D’Cruisers, The Lookout, Vintage Drama, Agiw, Impound, Domzque, Koogang, Fishcake, Pirates of the New Age, Tinap-an, Mange, Zigmantra and BDS Chickspoint. All acts were loud and original. It was a night of first and rare performance.

The album was produced by Central Sence and Sound Garage Recording Studio. The event was indeed a tremendous work by artists and performers who donated their time and talents without whom Bang Bang wouln not even be possible.

Special thanks to Roy Tutor, Ryan Macalandag and Charlven Remolador. Likewise, to the generosity of the event sponsors Island City Mall, That’s Aroma Grill House, Artline Studio, Kiss 102.3 FM, Tachycardia Music Bar, Punkstation Internet Café, Informatics Computer Institute, Cristal e- College, Angel Star Studio, Kanipaan Drive, Design Depot Graphics, Habagat Outdoors, Dunkin Donuts, Shiang Ma Nou, Mars Sound System and Nature’s Spring Water.

Events: Hudyaka sa Pasko '07

Happy New Year to all! Been a long time since we last posted here. The holidays was kinduv a rush and our one-person staff can't handle a lot of things all at the same time so we had to leave things here unattended for a short time.

Anyways, we are back in business and first off, I have to post some photos here as submitted by our "corresponent" Paolo Racho, of the event last December 22 held at the city port.

Events: Rocksteddy Rocks Tagbi

It was a rainy Friday afternoon. I was trapped in the mall and was starting to feel like a mallrat and I hated it. With just one stick of red ziggy at hand, I hurried to the top floor of BQ mall and smoked. To my surprise, there they were! On stage, sound-checking and yes, they were performing that night!

Sometimes, the rain gives pleasant surprises. So I immediately SMSd Ryan to meet up with for the concert. I gotta have company!

As usual, Ryan was, fashionably, late. He had reasons, of course. Or excuses.

And again, as usual, there was a front act. It was a good act though, the band called System Tools. They played Eric Clapton and Jason Mraz and other good ones, giving these rather popular songs new textures and interpretation as a whole. Systems Tools is promising and as Ryan would tell me later that night, they really are genuine musicians. The only disappointment is their name really. System Tools? Enough said.



After more than an hour, some drizzles and some booze direct from plastic cups and some good puffing of the ziggies, it was time to rock hard! And rock hard I did with the music of one of the country's more popular punk-rock/alternative Manila-based bands that gave us the impossibly unforgettable theme of the ABS-CBN series Super Inggo. I'm kidding. Of course they gave us other hits such as Magpakailanman (or, was this really a hit?) and the remakes of APO originals Blue Jeans and No Touch.

Well, my point is, they did a wonderful rak en rol feel that night and believe it or not, I was there, right in front of the stage, dancing, jumping, cheering, shouting. Along with -- too bad -- young squatter-punks (Ryan's words not mine) who did not stop asking me about the names of the band members particularly, the long-haired guitarist Joven.

After few songs, the show had to end, as usual. But not without giving the audience what they wanted (ahh, some wiggling, girating, and half-nakedness).





Teddy was, definitely a knock-down performer, pleasing everyone in the crowd with his greenness and down-to-earth attitude towards everybody else.

I didn't feel sorry, Rocksteddy did rock! (some of) the audience rocked harder! I wanted to rock the hardest but damn, in an ocean of adolescents, I chose not to.



Who cares about the songs? Who cares about the originality? Who cares about musicality? In rak en rol moments like that one, all that mattered was the performance and for me, a good reason to stay late out of the house.

Events: Suitcase 101 Thanksgiving @ Campsite

What better way to celebrate a band's success than rockin' it hard with feller bands who's been supportive all the way through. Suitcase 101 certainly knows how to appreciate the solid support of the rest of the underground community by throwing a huge gig for all the rockerz and rakiztaz alike to riff the night out into oblivion last Saturday Nov. 17 at Campsite.

With more than a handful of bands on the gig list, Campsite was overflowing as were the beers.



Suitcase 101 got to play past midnight halfway through the event. They didn't let the supporters down by playing the songs like they didn't win the damned contest yet. These kids sure do know how to work the crowd. Their presence and delivery just was way up there.





Sure, sure, their songs are about things as paltry-love as the other "pop bands" out there. But their music just kicks you right in the face 'til you stop doubting their sheer talent and end up wanting more - may it be "Kalahati" or "Boholano!".

Now, they are just a constant reminder that all the other bands in the community can do it too. The ringing in my ear as we went out of Campsite was evidence enough. Rock 'n Roll in Bohol is finally alive and kickin!
